Industry-University Cooperation in the Performing Arts Department for the 107-108 Academic Year

2019 《Dream Utopia》

2016-2019 “White Memory – Dream Utopia” is a collaboration with the Kaohsiung City Museum of History, having a total of 36 performances in a three-year period given at Qi-Hua Ke’s former residence.

In December 2016, Prof. Yu-Ling Li from the Department of Performing Arts of Shu-Te University led teachers and students to adapt Qi-Hua Ke’s autobiography “Taiwan Prison Island” into a play entitled “Dream Utopia”.  The performance style is an example of immersive theater, where the actors would perform in a loop for nearly four hours (quite a test of endurance) and the audience may enter and leave at their own leisure.  The audience is meant to deeply feel the fear and helplessness of the victims of the White Terror.

In 2017, the production added virtual reality (VR) contemporary technology into the performances; a pioneering effort to integrate drama with VR, and a new modern attraction for audiences of the next generation.  In the end, there was a sense of pilgrimage for young audiences to come to the former residence of Qi-Hua Ke in order to express their gratitude for his contribution to the modern democratic process.

| Introduction |

“Dream Utopia” uses immersive theater and VR combined with drama to present historical fragments of Taiwan that were once hidden; allowing the audience themselves to become characters in the play, and to deeply experience Qi-Hua Ke’s experiences of false accusation, torture, imprisonment, and his return from calamity.

● 2018 《Jianji Sonata – Fragmented and Fragrant》

The Opening Season of the Kaohsiung Weiwuying National Cultural Center Drama Theater

《Jianji Sonata – The Fragrant Fragrance》was organized by the Weiwuying National Arts and Culture Center and the Cultural Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government.  Theater director Xiao-Ping Li and screenwriter Hui-Ling Zhou were invited to present a drama set during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a time when colonized Taiwanese people were under social and economic pressure.  The story is told through the struggles of a Kaohsiung peasant activist.  The costume designer for the production was Yu-Ling Li of the Shu-Te University Department of Performing Arts.  More than a dozen STU DPA students participated in the performances on stage.
