JUNIOR YEAR PRODUCTIONS春季展演 - 學年製作

The junior year production is an important part of the Department of Performing Arts each year.   It is a large-scale performance jointly produced both by the students and a good number of faculty members.  Focusing on the performance of a specific theater work and its production process, all aspects of theater are focused upon.  Such a large production allows our students to work hands-on in an off-campus, professional theater and to experience their future career first hand.

● 2020 《Anatahan》

“The desert island is not terrible, the terrible thing is that people set foot on the desert island.”

Before her life passed away, the memories of the past led Kazuko back to the place that made her life change – Anatahan Island.

What went on on the island is a mystery.  One woman and thirty-two men, one island and two guns, how did they “survive”?  In the face of men infighting and intricate power struggles, how do women fight back?  An island… an island of mystery.  Who has the truth?  Who truly remembers?  Or is the truth hidden?

2020《Urine Town》

This black comedy production allows the audience to experience the standard contemporary Broadway repertoire, combining technological sound effects, gorgeous dance, and live music.

● 2019 《The Rocky Horror Show》

“The Rocky Horror Show” is a true classic and one of musical theater’s most endearing, sexy, and outrageously fun shows.  It holds a unique place in theater history, being a show which has defied the decades and continues to grow in popularity through its cult following.  DPA is thrilled to bring this rock and roll musical to Kaohsiung (let alone Taiwan).

“The Rocky Horror Show” pays tribute to the sci-fi/monster B movies that were popular in the middle of the last century.  An engaged couple get lost driving at night in a storm, seek help at a scary castle where they meet a mad scientist who creates a monster.  But “The Rocky Horror Show” has fun with this same story, where: the mad scientist is a funny transvestite, the monster is an attractive nice guy, and then there is a bazar love triangle between the engaged couple, the mad scientist, the monster, and other characters (some being same sex relationships).

2018《Frogs》

This production turns the satire and literary criticism of ancient Greek comedy into a twist that reflects contemporary social issues.

2017《Is This It?》

Pop superstar Michael Jackson’s “moonwalk” rocked Taiwan and the world.

“Michael Jackson-Is This It?” is based on everyone’s memory of Michael Jackson, returning to the 1980s from the Taiwanese perspective, deconstructing and collaging Taiwan’s news events at that time and elements of common culture .

2016 《Have Wok, Will Travel 》

Adapted from Taiwan’s well-known author Hui-Ling Zhou’s classic play “Baizhu Recipe”, the theater work tells the story of the first female soldiers in Taiwan who participated in the 1942 artillery battle.  They joined the military during Chinese New Year, and afterwards went back to their family lives having different secret life encounters. Throughout, time periods jump between 1958 and 1978, following the relationships between two different men and four different women among the melting pot of Taiwanese society.

2015《An An》

The magical, surreal musical theater piece “An An” tells the story of an urban fantasy of a girl next door.   Inspired by the fairy tale classic “Alice in Wonderland”, this new drama creation, visually whimsical and full of rich puns and riddles, comments on the controversial events of contemporary society and takes you on a journey of pursuit and growth.

2014《A Midsummer Night’s Dream》

2014 coincided with the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. The director adapted Shakespeare’s immortal romantic comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” into a rich music and dance drama feast.  This new take on “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” sets the time and place in the contemporary metropolis of New York, where actors are allowed to travel through the modern jungle, incorporating video multimedia, stylized staging and costumes, and live jazz.

GRADUATION PRODUCTIONS 藝動城堡 - 畢業製作

Annually, The DPA plans two seasons of performances.  Among them, the “Spring School Year Production” and the “Autumn Art Castle” consist of large-scale off-campus performances, while the summer and winter on-campus productions provide students with rich potential for performance experience.

Each “Autumn Art Castle” season is made up of 3 graduation productions.  Started in 2010, it is now in its tenth season.  For the 2014 season, DPA also joined with the newly founded STU Arts Management and Agent degree program in producing the season’s graduation productions.  Each“Arts Castle”season consistently produces theater works that combine the three fields of drama, music, and dance, as well as combining other media arts such as digital imaging, graphic design, and installation art.  These performance series has already become one of the prominent annual artistic and cultural events of Southern Taiwan.
